In an effort to consolidate my email, etc. I will be using my work email, embserherbert@hamline.edu for all correspondence related to the Magnetic North immigration project. I will, for the time being, maintain the 2moms2canada@gmail.com address for non-work related correspondence. Of course, in my field, the line is sometimes quite fuzzy indeed.
The take-away message here is that I will be closing the us2canada@gmail.com account so, if you wish to contact me, please use the relevant address, as above. Thanks so much!

Magnetic North
This blog is for people who are interested in participating in a [potential] book about Americans who have chosen to move to Canada. I've called it, tentatively, Magnetic North, because of the pull toward Canada that many of us feel.
Perhaps you are. . . Avoiding deployment to Iraq? Wanting to live where your family and/or relationship is recognized? Fed up with US politics and the direction the country seems to be headed? Or, maybe you would just as soon remain in the US, but you got a great job opportunity? Whatever the reason - I'm looking to create a list of folks willing and interested in sharing their experiences about deciding to leave to US.
Perhaps you are a bi-national couple? If one of you is a US citizen who must leave in order to remain with your partner, yes, you are welcome, too! The reason I'm focusing on "Americans" - I don't like that term, but people seem to agree on its meaning - is because, while many people understand why folks from less "privileged" nations might emigrate, many people think that those of us who are citizens of the US must be nuts to leave. It's easy to lump most decision in the "politics" category. I want to explore with greater nuance what it is that leads to people saying "Enough!" such that they leave successful careers, sell beautiful homes, leave family, and move north.
Who am I? Well, I'm a sociologist as well as someone who is in the process of acquiring my visa. If you wish to know more about me, feel free to visit my electronic portfolio at http://melissasheridanembserherbert.efoliomn2.com.
If you're interested or have questions, please contact me at embserherbert@hamline.edu.
Thanks so much for your help!
